What is a ‘dera’ and how they started?

May 25th, 2007 § 3

There are about 9,000 deras in Punjab and many of them are as old as the Sikh religion itself. Though this is not an official figure, but experts say there are two in every tehsil.Sikh scholar Dr Darshan Singh says, “Deras like that of Nirmalas, Ravidasiyas are old as the Sikh religion. However, ‘commercial deras’ like Dera Sacha Sauda were raised in late 60s and early 70s.”

Ask him for the reasons and he says, “Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and the people who ran them during those times. They ruined the institution for their vested interests, leading the deras to flourish in Punjab.”

Dr Balkar Singh, another Sikh scholar who has been very closely associated with the longest-serving SGPC president late Gurcharan Singh Tohra, says, “The definition of a dera is a place which is run by one person who calls himself a guru and such institutions are spread all over the state. I remember I used to joke with Tohra sahib that would he permit, there would be a dera in his name too. Derawaad flourished because the SGPC became a mere administrative body, and so did the Akal Takht. These two institutions which were supposed to give spiritual guidance to the Sikhs became highly politicised and the people of Punjab turned to deras.”

Talking about the clash between the Sikhs and the deras, he says, “There is no clash when it comes to religion. Had it been so, Nanaksar too is a dera and even Bibi Jagir Kaur runs a dera. This clash is basically a political issue.”

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, however, denies all these charges. “The SGPC has not failed. We are doing dharam parchar successfully. In the last one year, we have covered over 100 villages in Malwa where thousands of people have been baptised. The response from the youth is good who want to now revert to beard and turban,” he says.

Another reality about Dera

May 24th, 2007 § 2

While Dera spokesman is denying the allegations of murder and rapes. Jhootha sauda was digging some blogs and found that murdering someone at dera is not new but is an old trend at least the following lines are from someone stating it clearly:

I, Me, Myself on the political angle to the Dera Sacha Sauda controversy, and a personal recollection. “Then, one day, while he was at the Dera premises, he was poisoned and his corpse delivered home in a tractor-trolley on the next. The father, the devout follower that he was, refused to file a case of murder with the police and also forbade the rest of the family from doing so.

After this statement when the writer was questioned about the confirmation of the statement the answer came was:

I am absolutely confident and it is I and my family who have not yet chosen to take anyone to court for 25 years, rather than the other way round. It is we who did not file a complaint with the police.

By the way, the Dera and its followers are already in the dock for murder, rape and much else, as reported widely in the media, and the truth will be brought out very soon, I hope, for all to see.

I don’t know how many people realise the trauma that a family goes through when a member is murdered.

If it was my wish to get famous, all I had to do was to simply call a press conference and been on most television news channels and newspaper front pages by now.

PURPOSE

This webpage is meant as an eye opener to the actual reasons, cause and happenings behind the Dera Sacha Sauda issue. Almost all of us depend upon news channels to provide us with the latest updates on issues, but what is unfortunate is that most often one can see either incorrect or incomplete information, or a politically influenced or a biased view in these places. This web page is a small effort to bring to light the truth behind all of this.

Beauty parlour on Dera campus

May 22nd, 2007 § 2

My brain fails to understand the relevance of a beauty parlor in a place of worship where people go to find salvation. We are definitely not against personal hygiene, however I have not seen any beauty parlors in any religious places of even the most modern religions of the world. Maybe some dera followers should enlighten us how religion and business can coexist, where one asks you to denounce the love for “maya”(materials) and latter’s main concern is to gain “maya”.

Sunetra Chowdhury

The 700-acre campus of the Dera Sacha Sauda in Sirsa, Haryana includes a well equipped beauty parlour among other facilities run by the sect.

Father’s Day cards designed by the leader of the sect Baba Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim greet the customers.

”We do facials, threading, faxing, bleaching and haircuts,” says a beautician there.

Retaining peace the need of the hour

May 22nd, 2007 § 0

We at Jhootha Sauda think, that inspite of all the reasons and logics going against it, the need of the hour is to retain peace. One person with messed up mind should not be the reason that should lead us to dark hours of Punjab, we have recently come out of.

History is the proof, in a war of ideas and violence, it is ideas that won most of the time. Fight intellect with intellect. Instead of flaming the message boards of the dera followers, I would recommend all Punjabis to encourage them to start a logical dialogue, and show them the real picture of their so called guru.

It is a slow and painful process, and its hard to change already made up minds. But shunning them will harden their beliefs in the Dera. Start a logical dialogue with all those you can; there will always be some idiots, however remember the person who retains calm is the one who wins in the end.

This may seem like a typical Gandhian principle (I do respect Mr Gandhi, just like Martin Luther King ; however I’m not a Gandhian), but I would like to refer a note from my favorite Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s diary:

“The aim of life is no more to control mind, but to develop it harmoniously, not to achieve salvation here after, but to make the best use of it here below, and not to realize truth, beauty and good only in contemplation, but also in-the actual experience of daily life; social progress depends not upon the ennoblement of the few but on the enrichment democracy or universal brotherhood can be achieved only when there is an equality of opportunity of opportunity in the social, political and individual life.” (Page 124 of Jail notebook)

With the ongoing discussion surrounded around the event that took place on in the second week of April of 1699 AD, what should be definition of a Sikh, I would not be able to describe it better than the one described by RDB in their album “Vaisakhi”.
